Retro Polo Gear; Making a comeback?

Retro Polo Gear; Making a comeback?

I had to play mid-week chukkas in a pair of Hunter wellies, a showjumping skull cap and a pair of calf skin leather knee pads from the ’80’s. As you can imagine the wellies absolutely ruined my shins, the skull caps was modern, lightweight and surprisingly okay – if not a little hot. The knee pads were a revelation however!

I have a matching pair of calf skin boots, you remember the ones; they have the Velcro guard covering a half zip which wraps around the shin. Now these bad boys are soft, supple and comfortable.

Paired up with the retro knee pads I can honestly say I played my best in a long while. Suffice to say, these retro polo boots and knee pads are now in my every day kit bag. With my new-ish boots playing second fiddle and undergoing a rigorous regime of leather feed and softening.

  1. Brilliant! I 100% agree that second-hand boots are the best, new ones takes far too long to wear in and whilst they do they rub and cause me discomfort. if you look after them they last forever. My top tip is tonnes and tonnes of leather ‘food’ to make them supple and don’ dry wet boots in front of the AGA!
